Susanna Styve’s first book of poetry, Miscellaneous,
Tender, invites us into the private, sometimes lonely,
world of an only child, offering comfort to those who grew up
as only children, and challenging others to plunge down the
rabbit hole of surprise. Styve’s
prose poems create a fast-moving narrative, ranging from the
serious to the light-hearted. The book moves lightly with wit
and wry humor.
Susanna Styve, a native Minnesotan, grew up in
Afton
, on
the
St. Croix River
. An avid student of familial dynamics, her writing has
been fueled by the death of her father in 1999.
Before becoming employed by
Hamline
University
(
St.
Paul
,
Minnesota
), Styve earned a MFA degree in creative writing there.
Prior to that, she received her BA degree
from Macalester in Eastern philosophies and English, with a
concentration in creative writing.
Styve was the assistant poetry editor of Hamline?s literary journal, Water~Stone, for the 2002-03 issue. An accomplished tennis player, she further divides her time between her husband, two dogs, her mother and best friend, and writing.
